When I'm on transit, biking or walking, I notice people, places, the weather, etc. When I drive, I'm just focused on getting where I'm going and not running into anything. Most importantly, you don't really experience your city until you get out of the car and see things at human scale.150 minutes per week of moderate exercise is a heck of a lot easier to achieve when you spend 15-20 minutes/day walking instead of getting in the car (h/t /u/bleachercreature95).Put your bike on the front of the bus, bring your electric scooter on the train, call your Uber to pick you up when your 5 minutes from your stop, etc. No driving around looking for parking, or paying $20+ to park because there's an event going on.Bus drivers don't put up with shit from unruly passengers. Much safer than driving when you factor in the likelihood of getting in a car accident. ![]() beats time spent going gas-to-brake, cursing the person in front of you Time spent reading, catching up on work, surfing Reddit etc.Delays happen but so do traffic jams so it's a wash. Comparable trip time to driving during rush hour (driving can be faster on weekends if there's not a major event in town).I own a car, I just find it a more enjoyable experience to use transit within the city. Trains, buses, work commute, running errands, weekends, solo, with the family-I do it. At 7, 8, 9, 10pm, I'd take MARTA.Daily MARTA rider here. I am a firm advocate of using MARTA, but at midnight, for peace of mind, I'd take a taxi. My reservations, which I didn't enumerate since this topic has been discussed about a thousand times on this forum, are: 1) the route from ATL to the city goes through dicey areas and if anything bad is going to happen, midnight is a good time for it to happen as there are fewer business people and tourists out at that time 2) you're not familiar with the city and that late at night after a flight is a bad time to be thrown out of your comfort zone and 3) if your flight lands at midnight there's a chance MARTA may not be running anymore. I am more conservative, though, in making recommendations for visitors than I am in my own life. Frankly, I've ridden it alone after midnight through areas that I regularly recommend against in this forum. I would not recommend riding at midnight for a variety of reasons, but I ride MARTA at night all the time without any problem. I think most of us are generally on the same page. Let us know what you end up doing and how it turns out for you. Better than having luggage snatched, being robbed and losing your wallet, or worse. If it were me, I might just cough up the $30 for the taxi. I have come in late from a flight and taken MARTA using these precautions but I didn't exit downtown but further north and at a station where the issues are not as pronounced.Ĭheck with your hotel to see if they provide a shuttle that late. The other writers are correct that most of the time there is virtually no police presence on the trains, or in and around the stations, so these are target areas for predators. It will be during the intervening ride to the Five Points Station, where you'll have to change trains to the West Line in order to reach the GWCC station, and then from the station across to your hotel (whichever one it is). Its not at the airport that you'll have your problems. Board onto the very first car where the train operator is. Another voice here that says "use caution." IF you decide to take MARTA and you don't have a lot of luggage to schlepp about you may be OK but use common sense.
